THREE IN ONE
Right before stepping on stage for one of our concerts, our drummer, Jesus, said something that stuck with me: 'We're at least three bands in one.' At first, I wasn’t quite sure what he meant. But soon I realized he was referring to the different styles we blend into our repertoire. There’s the foundation of traditional, straight-ahead jazz, but you’ll also hear free-floating, harmonically open tunes, groove-driven rhythms, and avant-garde elements.
I understood that each of these influences represents a different chapter in my musical journey. The roots of traditional jazz trace back to my time at the Conservatory in Amsterdam. The groove-oriented, often odd-metered pieces stem from my studies in southern Germany. And the modern, avant-garde sounds reflect the past six years living in Berlin and being part of it's vibrant jazz-scene.
SAXOPHONE, GUITAR, DRUMS. NO BASS
Growing up with classical music, especially playing chamber music in my teenage years, has shaped my love for small band settings. There’s something about the intimacy and the space that smaller ensembles create, and I wanted to bring that to this trio. Leaving out the bass was a conscious choice—it gives the music a sense of airiness, making the sound more open and fragile, yet still full of energy. This fragility presents a unique challenge for all of us, pushing the music in exciting directions.
Even though the repertoire spans a wild mix of styles, I believe we've managed to craft a unified sound with this special trio format. It’s a delicate balance of freedom and cohesion that defines the essence of this record.
